THE JUNE BIRTHSTONE: PEARL
THE JUNE BIRTHSTONE: PEARL
Originating in oceans, lakes and rivers, pearls are an organic gem which form within living freshwater or saltwater molluscs such as an oyster and mussels.
Formed when a piece of sand, a parasite or other foreign body, such as mantle tissue, invades the mollusc shell. This can accrue naturally or with technical intervention when grown at a pearl farm, referred to as cultured pearls.
Due to the numerous variants relating to the growth of a pearl they are available in a large array of shapes, sizes and colours from white to black, and pink to yellow.
Believed in Middle Eastern mythology to have been teardrops from heaven or from the brain of a dragon by the Chinese. In ancient china people also believed that pearls protected them from fire and fire-breathing dragons.
Due to being associated with purity, humility and innocence pearls were traditionally given as a wedding gift. Beloved around the world by men and women of all ages, pearls are a timeless staple of all wardrobes and the perfect gift for anyone born in June, or celebrating a milestone such as a 30th wedding anniversary.
