Ring Resizing
A ring is more than just a piece of jewellery; it’s a symbol of love, commitment, and personal style. Whether it’s an engagement ring, wedding ring, or cherished family heirloom, your ring needs to fit precisely to be both comfortable and secure. Factors such as weight fluctuations, temperature changes, or receiving a ring as a gift, can all result in a less-than-ideal fit, which is why at Brufords, we’re here to help you find the perfect fit.
Why Ring Sizing is Important
There are several reasons why it’s important to ensure your rings fit perfectly, including comfort, structural integrity, and aesthetics:
Comfort and Wearability: A ring that is too tight can cause discomfort, restricting blood flow, and even becoming difficult to remove. On the other hand, a ring that is too loose can slip off easily, therefore increasing the risk of losing it. Resizing ensures that your ring fits snugly and comfortably, making it a pleasure to wear every day.
Structural Integrity: A poorly fitting ring can suffer from unnecessary wear and tear, such as bending or scratching. Correct sizing maintains the ring’s structural integrity, ensuring that it remains in good condition for years to come. This is particularly important for valuable rings, or those with sentimental value.
Enhancing Aesthetics: The way your ring sits on your finger affects its overall appearance. A well-fitting ring will sit evening, allowing any gemstones or designs to be displayed to their best advantage.
The Ring Resizing Process
The resizing process begins with a consultation with one of our in-store jewellery repair specialists. During this time, we will measure your finger size and examine the ring to determine the best method of resizing. Factors such as the ring’s material, design, how many sizes are needed, and the presence of gemstones will all influence the approach.
The ring is then sent to our local workshop for sizing.
Sizing Up
To make a ring larger, the jeweller will typically either stretch the band, or for a more significant increase, will cut the band and insert a small piece of matching metal. This new piece is then soldered into place.
Sizing Down
To reduce the size of a ring, a small section of the band is cut out, the band reshaped, and the ends rejoined.
Rings with gemstones, especially those ser around the entire band, can complicate the resizing process, and in some cases, resizing may require the removal and resetting of gemstones.
After the resizing is complete, the ring undergoes a final clean and polish to restore its original shine, before undergoing an inspection to ensure the resized band is smooth and even.
Considerations for Ring Resizing
It’s important to understand that not all rings can be resized easily. For example, rings made of harder materials such as titanium, tungsten, or ceramic are difficult, or impossible to resize. Similarly, rings with intricate designs, engravings, or full eternity rings, may require specialised techniques or be unable to be resized at all. Resizing a ring, especially by more than one or two sizes, can sometimes compromise its structure, so we can advise on the best course of action so that the ring remains strong and durable.
