THE JUNE BIRTHSTONE: ALEXANDRITE
THE JUNE BIRTHSTONE: ALEXANDRITE
One of three stones associated with those born in the month of June, the Alexandrite is a relatively new gem stone, discovered in the Russian Ural Mountains during the time of its namesake, the Russian czar Alexander II.
More recently alexandrite’s have been sourced from mines in Brazil, Sri Lanka and East Africa, since the Ural Mountain deposits were over mined.
“Emerald by day, Ruby by night”
The Alexandrite is the rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl that changes colour in different lighting. The chrysoberyl minerals absorb light in a complex way giving it a green appearance in natural sunlight, and brownish/purple red tone when exposed to artificial or candle light.
This stone makes a unique gift for anyone born in June and 55th wedding anniversary. Russian’s believe the Alexandrite stone is a good omen of things to come.
