Watch Battery Replacements
One of the most common maintenance requirements for a watch is its battery replacement. At Brufords, we offer a range of battery replacement options, but it’s important to understand how to recognise when your watch battery needs replacing, why you should have it changed professionally, and what the process involves.
How To Recognise The Signs That Your Watch Battery Needs Replacing
Recognising the signs that the battery in your timepiece is failing can save you from both inconvenience and damage to your watch. Whilst the most obvious sign is when your watch stops working all together, erratic timekeeping (either losing or gaining time), a second hand which “jumps” a few seconds at a time, or malfunctioning features such as alarms or backlights, are all indicators that it may be time for a new battery.
Why You Should Have Your Watch Battery Changed By A Professional
Whilst it can be tempting to try and change the battery yourself, or visit your local market stall, we recommend that you having your watch battery fitted by a professional. Not only do professional watchmakers and watch technicians have the tools and experience required to carefully open your watch and replace the battery without causing damage to delicate parts, if required they can also ensure they are sealed correctly, maintaining its water resistance.
The Battery Replacement Procedure
Understanding the basic process of watch battery replacement can help you know what to expect when you bring your watch in. Following an initial inspection, the watch back is carefully is carefully separated from the case using specialised tools. This is a crucial part of the process, particularly with water-resistant watches, to prevent damage. Once the movement is visible, the old battery is removed and replaced with a new one. The next step is to reseal the case, and if applicable, the water resistance is tested. Finally, the watch is tested to ensure it is working correctly.
