The May Birthstones: Emerald

Emerald, the gem of spring and perfectly apportioned as the May birthstone, has been adored for centuries, by all including Pharaohs, Maharajas and Queens.

First mined in Egypt they were favoured by Cleopatra and adorned in her Royal beautifications.

Legends also state that King Solomon was gifted as emerald as one of four precious stones by God which gave him over all creation.

Over the centuries emeralds have also been believed to endow the wear with many abilities.

  • When placed under the tongue the wearer will poses the ability to foresee the future, reveal truth

  • Protect against evil spirits

  • Cure diseases like cholera and malaria

  • Reveal the truth or falseness of lovers

  • Linked to the heart chakra, emeralds are believed to draw love into the life of the wearer

  • Make the wearer an eloquent speaker

Known for its vibrant green colour the emerald takes its name from the Greek word “Smaragdus” meaning green stone.

Today emeralds are the gem gifted for both twentieth and thirty-fifth wedding anniversaries.
