TAG Heuer & Gulf Oil International: A full-colour partnership!
In March this year (2018) TAG Heuer announced a global partnership with Gulf Oil International which will see the development of new activities and the introduction of the Monaco Gulf special edition.
With the immediately recognisable famous blue and orange stripes, Gulf has been a well-known player in the automotive industry for over 115 years. Quality, endurance and passion are the company's watchwords; proven by their history of innovation, invention and continuing development. It was the first company to drill for oil below the sea, and in 1913, became the first in the world to open a petrol station.
Gulf shares values with the TAG Heuer brand which has automotive sports in its DNA.
The Monaco Gulf 2018 Special Edition
Originally launched in 1969, the TAG Heuer Monaco was the first square water-resistant automatic chronograph to be produced in the history of Swiss watchmaking and broke the traditional rules of watchmaking.
Housing the revolutionary Calibre 11 automatic chronograph movement the Monaco is immediately recognisable with its square case, straight angles, metallic blue dial, domed Plexiglas crystal and left hand crown used to signify that the watch was wound automatically. The Heuer Monaco was a first for square watches.
During the filming of the movie “Le Mans” in 1971, where Steve McQueen drove the famous Gulf-Porsche 917K, he insisted on wearing the watch which was nicknamed the “McQueen Monaco” and become a coveted watch at auctions and in collections.
Many of the iconic features from the original Monaco can be referenced in the design of the Monaco Calibre 11 Gulf special edition.
With its 39 mm case size, left hand crown, legendary blue dial with two white counters, the date window at 6 o'clock, diamond-polished horizontal hour indices, inscribed vintage Heuer logo, calibre 11 automatic chronograph with date and water-resistance to 100 metres - all the attributes of the Monaco. As a reminder of its origins and sporting pedigree, a light blue and an orange stripe of Gulf’s renowned racing colours have been added to the dial. The Gulf logo also features at 6 o'clock.
The Monaco Calibre 11 Gulf special edition comes with all the original attributes of the 1969 of the original, with updates such as slimmer lugs, sapphire crystal glass and the open case-back, through which the movement’s gears can be seen. The piece is completed by an exquisite blue calf skin leather strap incorporating orange topstitching, for an elegant look and another nod to the Gulf logo.
