Celebrate the Tour de France with Tissot and W.Bruford

Founded in 1903, the Tour de France is the world's most prestigious cycling event. Departing Nice on 29th August, this years tour covers over 3,600km to reach its grand finale in Paris on 20th September. Typically comprising of 20 professional teams - each of 9 riders - the tour is France's premier annual event and is followed by millions of people around the world.

In a sport where every second counts, Swiss watch brand Tissot first became the Official Timekeeper of the Tour de France in 1988, until 1992, before returning to the race in 2016.

Paying tribute to the race itself as well as the commitment and dedication of its riders, each year Tissot unveils the latest piece in its Special Edition Tour de France collection. In 2020, the Tissot Supersport Chrono watch showcases a 45mm stainless steel case with tachymeter bezel. Presented on a black strap with iconic yellow details, the watch is powered by a quartz movement, and features 30-minutes and 1/10 of a second counters, ADD and SPLIT functions & central 60-seconds chronograph hand, as well as an EOL (end of life) battery indicator.

The History of The Tour de France

Created by Henri Desgrange and George Lefèvre in 1903, the Tour de France was originally founded to help publicise and improve circulation of sports newspaper "L'Auto". Consisting of six stages covering 2428km in a loop from Paris to Lyon then onto Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes and finally back to Paris, the average stage distance was 405km, meaning riders had to cycle day and night, as well are carrying out their own repairs if necessary. That first Tour was won by Maurice Garin in front of 20,000 Parisiens, and the L'Auto's circulation quadrupled, heralding the birth of something very special.

The coveted yellow jersey was introduced immediately after World War I by race founder Henri Desgrange. With the colour being chosen for two reasons - the roadside spectators could pick out the race leader easily and perhaps more significantly, L'Auto was printed on yellow paper - the first man to don the jersey was Eugene Christophe on 18th July 1919.

The longest race in Tour de France history took place in 1926, in which riders covered a total of 5745km. However, these lengthy rides became a think of the past in the 1930s when the tour was opened to other advertisers and coverage was broadcast live on the radio.
